Provenance / Collectors' marks: Thomas Eakins; his widow Susan Eakins; acquired by Charles Bregler, Philadelphia. Charles Bregler acquired from the widow by gift, and confiscation after her death; Mary Bregler (widow of Charles); gift to donor. See Kathleen Foster and Cheryl Leibold, Writing on Eakins (Philadelphia: Pennsylvania Academy, 1990) on Charles Bregler’s Thomas Eakins Collection.

The image depicts D. Hayes Agnew, Chief of Surgery, performing a mastectomy operation at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (where the painting is owned). Eakins exhibited copy photographs, known as “autotypes,” after his paintings.
