Hercules and Cacus,
Chiaroscuro woodcut printed in black, yellow, and yellow-green inks on heavyweight laid paper
Second of six states
Print impression quality: Block slightly worn; repair right edge; vertical creases, lower right
Dimensions (Image): 409 x 330 mm (16.1 x 13 in.)
Dimension notes: image dimensions are for block
Signed: “Goltzius Inve”
Watermark: No watermark
Edition: Based on description of states in Bialler (1992), this appears to be state ii/vi, printed ca. 1605–1617 by “Willem Ianssen in de vergulde Sonnewyser”; but this impression does not include the usual letterpress inscription (which may have been trimmed off) for Ianssen on the bottom margin. Assignment to the second state is based solely on the strength of the colors and strong contrasts between the colors; see Bialler, pp. 82–83 (Clare Rogan, 9/9/2006).
