Augury reflects Gottlieb’s experimentation with the Surrealist techniques of automatic drawing and free association. Gottlieb called his works of the 1940s Pictographs and employed a flat grid to eliminate the last vestiges of illusionistic space, incorporating drawings of signs, figures, and eyes.
