The image depicts “Philomene Gregoire. Age 43 years. A Montagnais Indian woman of Seven Islands, Quebec, Canada, on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Typical hair-do… Cap worn is sign of high caste. The artist found her at an Indian tipi camp in the deep woods where she was felling large spruce trees with an axe” (per artist’s notes on inventory list).
