In 1862, Charles Shepherd and Arthur Robertson formed a partnership called "Shepherd & Robertson" in Agra, India. In 1864, the firm moved to Simla and Samuel Bourne joined the business. It is perhaps at this point that the firm changed its name to "Howard, Shepherd & Bourne" which operated until 1870. Ca. 1868, Bourne & Shepherd was formed in Simla, India.
