- sedan chairs - Portable chairs borne on two long poles; generally with elaborate upholstery and decoration. For conveyances for one person consisting generally of canvas or similar material stretched or laid across a frame for transporting the sick, wounded, or dead use "stretchers (conveyances)." For more elaborate conveyances boxlike in form and often enclosed by curtains and carried on poles by people or animals use "litters."
