African Hospitality (L’African hospitalier)

ca. 1794-1795
18th century
430 x 579 mm (16.9 x 22.8 in.)

Rollet, French
After John Raphael Smith, British (English), (1751–1812)
After George Morland, British (English), (1763–1804)

Object Type: print
Medium and Support: Stipple engraving on white laid paper
Print impression quality: Good
Edition: Published by François Depeuille, Rue Franciade Section de Bon Conseil No. 52. Regarding date: Pluriose was the 5th month of the Republican calendar (from January 20, 21, or 22 to February 19, 20, or 21); Ernest Lowrie and Wesleyan Professor Nathaniel Greene both give 4 February 1794 as the date slavery was abolished, but the government kept changing the calendar. Depeuille moved to another address in 1795, thus the Rollet prints probably date to 1794–95; see Préaud, et al., Dictionnaire des éditeurs d’estampes… (1987), 101.
Marks: Inscribed in plate, lower right: “Gravé par la Cit.ae [Citoyenne] Rollet”
Provenance / Collectors' Marks: From a collection in southern Germany that descended in the family of an eighteenth-century collector of more than 3,000 English prints; purchased through Nigel Talbot, Grosvenor Prints, on auction at Sotheby’s, 13 November 1997.
Credit Line: Friends of the Davison Art Center funds, 1997
Accession Number: 1997.16.4
