Suzuki Harunobu, aka Hozumi, Chôeiken, Shikojin, Japanese, (1725–1770)
- courtesans - Prostitutes who draw their clientele from a court or from the upper classes, and whose services often include social entertaining as well as sexual activity. [January 1993 descriptor added.]
- koto - Long zithers with a slightly convex soundboard and flat bottom, having 13 silk or nylon strings each passing over its own movable, V-shaped bridge; it is considered the national instrument of Japan.
