Hercules and Cacus

1588
16th century
409 x 330 mm (16.1 x 13 in.)

Hendrick Goltzius, Dutch, (1558–1617)

Object Type: print
Medium and Support: Chiaroscuro woodcut printed in black, yellow, and yellow-green inks on heavyweight laid paper
State: Second of six states
Print impression quality: Block slightly worn; repair right edge; vertical creases, lower right
Edition: Based on description of states in Bialler (1992), this appears to be state ii/vi, printed ca. 1605–1617 by “Willem Ianssen in de vergulde Sonnewyser”; but this impression does not include the usual letterpress inscription (which may have been trimmed off) for Ianssen on the bottom margin. Assignment to the second state is based solely on the strength of the colors and strong contrasts between the colors; see Bialler, pp. 82–83 (Clare Rogan, 9/9/2006).
Marks: Signed: “Goltzius Inve”
Marks: Watermark: No watermark
Provenance / Collectors' Marks: Unidentified collector “BM” (mark in ink on verso: “BM”)
Bibliography: Bartsch 231 (vol. 3, p. 72); Hollstein 373; Strauss 403; Bialler (1992) cat. no. 25 ii.
Credit Line: Gift of George W. Davison (BA Wesleyan 1892), 1939
Accession Number: 1939.D1.173
