Marks: Inscribed, upper right: “Hyakunin Isshu Uwakaetoki” [title], “Minamoto no Muneo Yuki Ason” [poet’s name] and his poem in square cartouche; signed, upper right: “Zen Hokusai [Manji]” [artist’s name]; inscribed with poem translated on original DAC catalog card as: “Friends have gone from me / The grass and leaves are withered; / Ah, how remembrance / Make wintertime more lonely / Here in this mountain hamlet” or “A mountain hamlet / Winter! and the loneliness / Ever increasing. / All touch with friends, all leaves and Grasses dead. —When one feels that…!”
