Kunisada Utagawa , aka Kôchôrô, Toyokuni III, Japanese, (1786–1864)

Medium and Support: Cherry wood carved on both sides
Edition: Kunisada began to produce his first book illustrations in 1807. Carved on both sides for book illustrations or surimono, this is one of two blocks in the collection for “Ona Masakado,” the story of a warrior during the Gempe era.
Marks: Inscribed in ink in Japanese characters, on paper affixed to sides of blocks: “Kunisada / The Early Years / The Reign Period”
Provenance / Collectors' Marks: Purchased by the donor from a New York dealer in 1953.
