Provenance / Collectors' Marks: From a collection in southern Germany that descended in the family of an eighteenth-century collector of more than 3,000 English prints; purchased through Nigel Talbot, Grosvenor Prints, on auction at Sotheby’s, 13 November 1997.
Bibliography: Smith cat. no. 255; Ackermann 1802, 9; this print and its companion (DAC 1997.16.6), with Pindar’s “whimsical verses,” were discussed in the Monthly Magazine, vol. 14 (1 August 1802), p. 59.
