Bocher 200; Draibel 40; Portalis and Beraldi 38 ii/ii (vol. 2, p. 161). The “Mercure de France” of 24 January 1782 describes the enormous crowds at the event. Upon entering the ballroom, the King and Queen were so closely surrounded that the Queen cried, “I am suffocating” and the King was obliged “de se faire place à coups de coude. Malgré cela, ils ont paru s’amuser” [quotation from unknown source].
