The Moralist
Inscribed: “Painted by J. R. Smith Engraved by W. Nutter / Let Youth pluck the rose & a wreath let him weave / While wet with the dew of the morn; / But alas he will find when with me at the eve, / That the rose left behind it a thorn. / The pluck’t rose is the classical emblem of death, / Tis the mirror we hold to the fair, / It teaches how Virtue embalmeth the breath, / But if pluck''t—it empoisons the air / [?W]”; 15 January 1805 by Molteno

Published by François Depeuille, Rue St. Denis Section Bon-conseil. Regarding date: Pluriose was the 5th month of the Republican calendar (from January 20, 21, or 22 to February 19, 20, or 21); Ernest Lowrie and Wesleyan Professor Nathaniel Greene both give 4 February 1794 as the date slavery was abolished, but the government kept changing the calendar. Depeuille moved to another address in 1795, thus the Rollet prints probably date to 1794–95; see Préaud, et al., Dictionnaire des éditeurs d’estampes… (1987), 101.
