From an edition of 30 printed in Tahiti by the artist. These woodblocks were printed as the masthead for Gauguin’s newsletter “Le Sourire.” Gauguin first published “Le Sourire” in August 1899. His intention was to satirize smug European attitudes towards the indigenous people of Tahiti.
