Werner Mantz

German, (1901–1983)
Born 28 April 1901 in Cologne. Mantz took up photography in 1915 in Cologne, Germany. Until 1920 he photographed the city during World War I. From 1920 to 1921, Mantz studied photography at the Bayerischen Lehr-und Versuchsanstalt (Bavarian State School of Photography) in Munich. From 1921 to 1926, Mantz worked as a professional portrait photographer in Cologne. In 1927, Mantz began to specialize in architectural photography and until 1938, he worked for the City of Cologne and for individual architects. Mantz set up a second studio in Maastricht, Netherlands in 1932. In 1937-1938, Mantz produced a documentary on the mines of Holland. In 1938 Mantz settled permanently in Maastricht, Netherlands, where he retired in 1971. He died in the Netherlands.
