Boîte-en-Valise
195220th century
410 x 308 x 102 mm (16.1 x 12.1 x 4 in.)
Marcel Duchamp, French, (1887–1968)
Object Type:
other
Medium and Support:
Leather- and cloth-covered box containing lithographic reproductions and various media
Edition:
Box of lithographic reproductions of Duchamp’s work. Previously catalogued as one of twenty deluxe copies, this is actually from another set of fifteen, Bonk Series B. It also contains “Rotoreliefs,” 1953 edition (Arturo Schwarz 441a). Rose Fried organized an exhibition of the Duchamp family in 1952 (Bonk, p. 172); she also became distributor of the boite in 1952, a role she continued until 1954. It appears that the DAC boite was not for distribution, but rather a personal gift from Duchamp to Fried.
Marks:
Inscribed in black pen in the interior: “Pour Rose Fried, grand voyageuse, cette valise contenant 68 items et mes bons souhaits / Marcel Duchamp / N. Y. 1952”
Provenance / Collectors' Marks:
Donated to the DAC by Rose Fried of the Rose Fried Gallery, New York
