- books - Collections of wood or ivory tablets, or sheets of paper, parchment, or similar material, that are blank, written on, or printed, and are strung or bound together; commonly many folded and bound sheets containing continuous printing or writing; especially, when printed, a bound volume, or a volume of some size. - type - The rectangular pieces, usually metal, having on one side a letter or other character, from which text is composed and set to be printed. For sets of printed characters that share certain characteristics of style or design, use "typefaces." [February 1993 descriptor added.]
